As COVID-19 spreads throughout the United States and we are expected to soon reach the peak, resources are becoming scarce. Clinicians on the front line must protect themselves from getting the virus, and to do that, hospitals need supplies. N95 masks, protective eyewear, hospital gowns, ventilators and even hospital beds are becoming short in supply. Due to the need for more medical supplies, hospitals have been getting creative with their supply usage.
Clinicians are trying to reduce their exposure to COVID-19 by using protective masks, eyewear, and gowns. With the rapid use of personal protective equipment (PPE), clinicians and hospital workers have had to alter traditional usage of protective products. Hospital staff are “storing N95 masks in paper bags for 72 hours” between uses because that is the period of time in which the coronavirus is expected to live (Riski, 2020). Some are wearing their masks for the entire 12 hour shift, while others are beginning to wear homemade masks because they have no other options.
Since the disease spreads so quickly and can be contracted if the virus gets into a person’s eyes, healthcare professionals need reliable PPE. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends to cancel elective appointments in which eye protection is used so that there is a greater supply to help with COVID-19. The CDC is also advising to implement extended use of eye protection. To further combat the rapid usage of protective eyewear, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of a particular pair of swimming goggles to be used during the COVID-19 epidemic. The Dolfino Pro Vision swim goggle has been FDA approved to protect healthcare professionals’ eyes. Although not conventionally used in healthcare, these goggles provide a good alternative in dire circumstances.
Due to COVID-19 and the strains that it places on supply chain, GreenLight Medical is releasing a Product Library in order to facilitate processes for hospitals who may be struggling. This Library is a space where hospitals may browse through many products, including COVID-19 products, and request a product directly from GreenLight’s platform. To learn more click here.
